“They will never recover” – Kevin Durant thinks his Finals MVPs are the main reason Golden State Warriors fans hate him originally appeared on Basketball Network.

While the NBA offseason is a time of uncertainty for most teams and players, with no one knowing what trades could go down, one thing is pretty consistent. Kevin Durant spends his hot summer days debating with fans on social media. This time, his relationship with Golden State Warriors fans came into focus.

It’s been six years since KD last wore the jersey of the team he helped win two NBA titles, but fans still haven’t forgotten the most controversial chapter of his career.

Why is it the most controversial? The man had a 3-1 lead with his Oklahoma City Thunder against the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, only to blow it in seven games. The exact same scenario happened to the Warriors in the NBA Finals, becoming the first team in history to lose a 3-1 lead on that stage.

Durant joined that same Warriors squad shortly after, a move many labeled soft from both the Warriors and KD. Still, Durant and the Warriors didn’t care too much about the noise as they went on to win two championships in three Finals appearances during KD’s stint. Durant didn’t play in the third Finals due to an ACL injury.

Durant was the Warriors’ leading scorer for three seasons

Stephen Curry showed a true championship mindset during those years, willingly stepping back to let Durant become the team’s primary scoring option, and KD delivered. Durant was the Warriors’ leading scorer for three seasons at 28.5 points per game (regular season, playoffs, Finals), while Curry averaged 26.4 in that span. As a reward, Durant earned two Finals MVPs, the peak of individual success for any player.

Steph was the face of the rising franchise during those years, but even after three rings, he still didn’t have a Finals MVP to his name as tension about his legacy was emerging. Over the years, Durant’s relationship with Warriors fans soured, and now he’s offered his take on the situation on his X profile.

“Them finals MVPs, they will never recover,” said Durant.

Many fans wanted to see Curry win a Finals MVP

To some, this might sound like a shot at Curry, but it’s not. Even after parting ways, Steph and KD still have a great relationship, which was clear during last year’s Olympics in Paris, when they won gold together under head coach Steve Kerr. It was a full-circle moment for the trio from the Warriors’ dynasty era.

When it comes to the Warriors’ success, many fans wanted to see Curry win a Finals MVP. But with Durant putting up legendary performances, against none other than LeBron James, it just wasn’t going to happen.

Grant Hill sees things differently and believes Curry doesn’t get enough credit for sacrificing his role for KD.

I thought he really sacrificed his game for Kevin Durant and rightfully so,” Hill said of the former unanimous MVP. “Kevin Durant, great player, new environment. I think Steph Curry, people don’t appreciate how he went out of his way.”

KD still carries the stigma that he’s never won anything without Steph

Still, both Curry and Warriors fans got a bit of satisfaction in 2022, when they beat the Boston Celtics for another ring, and Steph finally earned the one individual honor that had eluded him, the Finals MVP.

On the other hand, as great as KD has been, he still carries the stigma that he’s never won anything without Steph, neither before nor after their run together, despite sharing the locker room with players like Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.

Still, the impression is that most Warriors fans appreciate everything Durant did for their franchise, and Steph, who he is, would never have stepped aside for Durant if he didn’t believe he could lead them to the top. And that’s what makes both of them special, because it’s not always the case that top stars manage to coexist successfully.
