The Los Angeles Lakers are searching for their next big man and they’re not being cautious about it. As trade talks heat up, the team has focused on three names — Nick Richards, Yves Missi, and Robert Williams III.
Whether it’s Richards’ efficiency, Missi’s explosive athleticism, or Williams’ exceptional rim protection, the Lakers are pursuing the perfect combination of impact and potential to enhance their frontcourt rotation.
Los Angeles Lakers explore trade with Phoenix Suns for efficient big man Nick Richards
The front office, guided by Rob Pelinka, has seen a flurry of calls about potential trades to secure a center. The Lakers have reached out to the Phoenix Suns about Nick Richards, who transitioned from Charlotte to Phoenix in mid-January and immediately caught attention with his energy and efficiency.
In his limited minutes around 22 per game — he averaged 9.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and shot an outstanding 59% from the field, while achieving a double-double (21 points and 11 rebounds) in his debut.
The Lakers also made a move to connect with the New Orleans Pelicans about rookie center Yves Missi, selected 21st in the 2024 NBA Draft. In his first year, Missi averaged 9.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks across 26.8 minutes, securing a place on the All-Rookie Second Team.
His impressive athleticism landing 116 dunks in 73 games meets the Lakers’ demand for a high-energy rim runner. The third name is Robert Williams III of the Portland Trail Blazers, who’s a fan favorite among Lakers supporters for his ability to block shots and finish alley-oops. However, there’s a downside: in his seven-year career, he’s only managed to exceed 52 games in a season once, and he’s been sidelined for 40 or more games in five seasons due to injuries.
He’s viewed as a “high-risk, high-reward” player.
The Los Angeles Lakers front office is targeting cost-controlled and athletic centers
Nick Richards has a solid track record with a career shooting percentage of 64%. Even though he’s recently dropped to 59%, he still shows he’s an elite finisher. His steady performance makes him a dependable choice coming off the bench.
Yves Missi presents a lot of untapped potential: he’s a vertical leaper who averages dunks, hits one in three of his shot attempts, has a solid rebounding ability, and possesses defensive instincts, even though he’s only 21.Robert Williams III offers great shot-blocking ability and defensive length, yet he has significant durability worries — his injury past causes hesitation for the front office. Also Read: Jayson Tatum’s two words say it all as Boston Celtics loses third core player in Luke KornetThe Lakers are casting a wide net, assessing cost, fit, and risk.
